Quartet in the community
Everyone in the community has something to give and something to gain. What is the Quartet in the Community?
The Quartet in the Community is a group of four Margate schools formed to develop a range of services and community projects which meet the needs of local people. The four schools are:
- Hartsdown Technology College
- Garlinge Infant & Nursery School
- Holy Trinity and St. Johns CE Primary School
- Salmestone County Primary School
You may have already heard of the Quartet in the Community project and some of you may have already enjoyed the many events held during the past year.A newsletter is produced every three months to keep you up-to-date with the projects activities, events and courses being held for our community.
The Quartet in the Community appointed Nicola Wood as Project Co-ordinator and her role is to develop and implement a programme of activities for the benefit of the local community. Nicola told us more about her role in the first Quartet newsletter.
Quartet in the Community is a Kent Community Schools pilot project set up by a group of four schools in Margate. The project is part of Kent County Council’s Community Schools Development Strategy. The four schools are Hartsdown Technology College, Garlinge Infant School, Holy Trinity and St.John’s Primary School and Salmestone Primary School. The four schools believe they can make more of an impact working as a partnership than separately.
The aim of the pilot projects—of which there are more than twenty in Kent—is to trial some new ideas about the potential role of schools in the community. The principal idea is that schools can make a huge difference in their communities, not just by educating children to a high standard, but by making available more of the services and facilities that children, families and communities need to fulfil their potential. Ultimately this will help schools in their core task of education, by addressing barriers to learning and increasing parental and community engagement with the school and its work.
The vision statement prepared by the four Headteachers states:
‘In the longer term, it is envisaged that each of the schools will become a focal point for community activity and learning. Schools will genuinely become a community resource, used and led by local people for their benefit. The core value that underpins this project is, ‘Everyone in the community has something to give and something to gain.’
Three strands of activity have been identified and these are:
- Health and wellbeing
- Parental involvement in learning
- Out of school hours childcare and youth activities
